🌑 Menstruation: Days 1–5 The Winter. The New Moon within.

Of all the phases, menstruation is the one most naturally aligned with nature's own rhythms. The bleeding body is already operating as nature operates - cyclically, honestly, without performance, in its own timing. During this phase the separation between self and natural world tends to thin on its own. Many women find they are more sensitive to weather, to light, to the presence of plants and animals, to the quality of the air around them. This is not imagination. It is the nervous system returning to a more porous, less defended mode of perception. Nature week during menstruation can produce the most profound contact of the whole cycle - if you move slowly enough to receive it.

This phase and the Nature menu:

➕ Add: a daily sit spot - the same place, every day, simply watching - is most powerful when begun during menstruation. The body is already slow. The mind is already quieter. What the sit spot reveals on these days tends to be more vivid and more felt than at any other phase.

➖ Remove: the speed that makes the natural world invisible is most important to address now, because menstruation already slows you whether you choose it or not. Work with that slowing rather than against it. Let the natural world come into focus at the pace your body is already offering.

🌀 Deepen: bringing your existing spiritual practice outside for the full week is especially potent during menstruation. Mantra under open sky, meditation with bare feet on earth, morning prayer facing the rising sun - the practice does not change, but everything around it does. Something in the body recognizes that this is how it was always meant to be done.

Journaling prompt for this phase: If my body is nature - if the same intelligence that moves seasons moves through me - what season am I in right now? What does that season need?

General recommendations: Go outside even on the days when the body wants to stay horizontal. Even five minutes of genuine contact with open air and living things during menstruation can shift the quality of the whole day. The bleeding body is already doing the most natural thing a body can do. Let it do it in the most natural environment available to you.

🌒 Follicular: Days 6–13The Spring. The Waxing Moon within.

Follicular and spring are the same movement - energy returning, curiosity opening, the genuine desire to explore and discover. This is the phase most naturally suited to learning about the natural world, beginning a new relationship with a place or a species, and initiating practices of observation that require patience and regularity. The returning light of follicular makes the natural world feel newly available, newly interesting, newly worth knowing.

This phase and the Nature menu:

➕ Add: learning the name of five living things in your environment that you currently cannot name is most naturally begun in follicular. Curiosity is at its peak and the willingness to be a genuine beginner - looking things up, asking, observing closely - is most available now. Begin the five relationships.

➖ Remove: the belief that you need to go somewhere special to access nature is most worth releasing in follicular, when the returning energy can make "I'll go somewhere proper soon" feel like a plan rather than an avoidance. Start with what is already outside your door.

🌀 Deepen: exploring one indigenous or traditional ecological worldview suits follicular's appetite for new frameworks and new ways of seeing. Shinrin-yoku, Mitákuye Oyásʼiŋ, the Vedic understanding of the five elements as sacred - let one of these reframe the living world you are already walking through.

Journaling prompt for this phase: What living thing in my immediate environment have I been walking past without truly seeing? What would it take to actually meet it this week?

General recommendations: Initiate in follicular - begin the sit spot, start the nature journal, take the first barefoot walk. Whatever practice you want to carry through the week, begin it now while the energy to begin is genuinely available. The relationship with the natural world you build in follicular tends to deepen naturally as the cycle continues.

🌕 Ovulation — Days 14–16
The Summer. The Full Moon within.

Ovulation in the context of nature week produces something particularly beautiful - the outward, connective, presence-oriented energy of this phase turns toward the living world and finds genuine communion there. The capacity for wonder is highest during ovulation. The sense of aliveness - in the body, in others, in the world - is most available. This is the phase where a tree can genuinely stop you in your tracks. Where the quality of light at a particular hour can feel like a conversation. Where the natural world stops being background and starts being company.

This phase and the Nature menu:

➕ Add: one meal eaten entirely outside, slowly, without a phone - is most naturally enjoyable during ovulation, when the senses are heightened and the pleasure of sensory experience is most available. Let eating outside become an act of genuine presence rather than a change of location.

➖ Remove: nature as backdrop is most worth addressing during ovulation because this phase has the sensory and emotional resources to actually meet the living world rather than moving through it. Practice putting the internal monologue down and letting what is outside you have your full attention, even for a few minutes at a time.

🌀 Deepen: spending one extended period in nature completely alone and without a task - one hour minimum, no phone, no book - suits ovulation's full-bodied presence and openness. This phase makes solitude in nature feel spacious rather than isolating, receptive rather than empty. The living world has things to say. This is the phase most likely to hear them.

Journaling prompt for this phase: When I am truly present in a natural environment, what do I feel in my body that I don't feel indoors? Where do I feel it? What does it tell me?

General recommendations: Go toward beauty this week. Ovulation responds to beauty more directly than any other phase - and the natural world is full of it, in forms that cost nothing and require only arrival. Let the beauty of the living world be a practice this week.

🌘 Luteal — Days 17–28
The Autumn. The Waning Moon within.

Luteal and autumn are the same movement - turning inward, releasing what is no longer needed, preparing for a renewal that is not yet visible. Nature during late luteal has a particular quality of consolation. Not the expansive wonder of ovulation, not the initiating freshness of follicular. Something quieter. The late afternoon light, the sound of wind in trees, the particular quality of air before rain - these things can reach a luteal nervous system in ways that indoor environments simply cannot. Nature is regulating during late luteal in a way that is specific to this phase and worth using deliberately.

This phase and the Nature menu:

➕ Add: barefoot contact with earth once a day is most regulating during late luteal, when the nervous system is most activated and most in need of the grounding that direct contact with the earth provides. Even five minutes of feet on soil or grass shifts the physiological state measurably. This is not metaphor. This is what the body needs.

➖ Remove: indoor air as your only air is most important to address in late luteal, when the tendency to contract, stay inside, and manage from behind glass is strongest. The outside air does something for the late luteal body that indoor air cannot. Go out even when nothing in you wants to. Especially then.

🌀 Deepen: a seven-day nature journal - one paragraph of genuine observation each day - is most grounding during late luteal when the mind is most likely to be turning inward in an unhelpful, repetitive way. Redirecting attention outward, toward something specific and alive, interrupts the rumination loop and replaces it with something that is both calming and real.

Journaling prompt for this phase: What is the natural world doing right now, in this season, in this weather, in this light, that mirrors something I am feeling? What would it mean to trust that this too is natural?

General recommendations: Use nature as medicine during late luteal, specifically and deliberately. Not as exercise, not as scenery. As medicine. Identify the natural environment that most reliably regulates your nervous system - ocean, forest, open sky, a specific garden - and go there this week when you feel most contracted. The living world has been receiving human beings in this state for as long as human beings have existed. It knows what to do with you. Let it.
