🌑 Menstruation: Days 1–5 The Winter. The New Moon within.
Menstruation and relationship have a complicated, honest conversation. The bleeding body withdraws - it needs less contact, less noise, less demand from others. And it is also, paradoxically, the phase where our emotional truth about our relationships tends to surface most clearly. What we have been tolerating, what we have been missing, what we have been too busy or too defended to feel - all of this tends to arrive during the quiet of bleeding days. This is not the time to act on what you find. It is the time to see it clearly.
This phase and the Relationship menu:
➕ Add: a weekly relationship inventory - the 10-minute sit with which relationships feel nourishing, draining, unfinished, neglected - is most honestly answered during menstruation, when the usual social performance drops and something more truthful can be heard. Write what is actually true, not what you think should be true.
➖ Remove: scorekeeping is most worth releasing during menstruation specifically, because late-cycle hormones already activate the brain's threat-detection system - making slights feel larger, ledgers feel more urgent, and the sense of unfairness feel more real than it may actually be. Name it, and put it down.
🌀 Deepen: writing a letter you may not send suits menstruation perfectly. The veil is thin, the defenses are down, and the hand can write what the mouth rarely says. Whatever has been stored in the body about a relationship that needs to move - let it move onto the page this week.
Journaling prompt for this phase: Which of my relationships feels most true right now, and which feels most performed? What would it cost me to close the gap between the two?
General recommendations: Ask for less from your relationships during menstruation and give yourself permission to need less social contact than usual without guilt or explanation. The clarity that arrives during this phase about your relationships is some of the most reliable information your cycle offers. Receive it. Do not act from it yet. Let it settle before you speak.
🌒 Follicular: Days 6–13The Spring. The Waxing Moon within.
Estrogen is rising. Energy is building fresh and clean from the quiet of menstruation. This is your most expansive, initiating phase - the body is ready to begin, explore, and try new things. Motivation comes more easily here than at any other time in the cycle.
This phase and the Body menu:
➕ Add: this is your best phase for establishing a new body practice because your brain's neuroplasticity is literally higher during follicular. Choose something that requires a little courage or novelty; the cold water finish (option 2) lands well here as the body has more resilience and the nervous system responds with energy rather than depletion. Conscious movement before screens (option 3) is also powerful now - your body wants to move and this channels that rising energy with intention. ➖ Remove: follicular is an excellent time to remove unconscious phone use in bed (option 4) - your sleep is naturally lighter and more restorative in this phase and protecting it amplifies the energetic rising. Also a strong time to remove the food your body has been signaling discomfort about (option 5) - you have the clarity and motivation to observe the difference. 🌀 Deepen: your existing yoga or movement practice (option 1) responds beautifully to follicular energy - this is when adding intensity, trying a new style, or showing up more consistently feels supported rather than forced. Also consider learning something about your body's specific design (option 4) - your mind is sharp and curious in this phase and new information integrates well.
Journaling prompt for this phase: What does my body want to explore or try that I have been hesitant about? What new relationship with my physical self am I being invited to begin?
General recommendations: This is your initiating phase, use it. Begin new habits here rather than at arbitrary calendar dates. Increase movement gradually. Experiment with foods, practices, timings. Your body is more resilient and adaptive now than at any other point in the cycle.
🌕 Ovulation — Days 14–16
The Summer. The Full Moon within.
Ovulation is the relational phase. Full stop. The body orients entirely toward connection during these days - toward warmth, toward being seen, toward the pleasure of genuine contact with another person. Presence comes naturally. Empathy is heightened. The desire to give and receive love is at its monthly peak. This phase is not the time for the hard relational work. It is the time for the full relational pleasure - for remembering why the people in your life matter, for being delighted by them, for letting them delight in you.
This phase and the Relationship menu:
➕ Add: a daily moment of genuine appreciation expressed out loud is most natural and most powerful during ovulation. The warmth is already there. The words come more easily. This phase wants to express what it feels. Let it express appreciation specifically - named, real, and spoken rather than assumed.
➖ Remove: relating from your wound rather than your wholeness is most worth examining during ovulation, because this phase makes wholeness genuinely accessible. When you are resourced and warm and connected, ask yourself: is this how I relate when I am at my best? And notice how different it is from how you relate when you are depleted.
🌀 Deepen: exploring one teaching on conscious relationship suits ovulation's generous, curious, outward-facing energy. The mind is open, the heart is open. Take in something that expands your understanding of what love can be and what relationship is actually for.
Journaling prompt for this phase: When I am at my most loving and most present - what does my relating look like? What makes it possible? What gets in the way of it being like this more often?
General recommendations: Let yourself be in relationship fully this week. Not working on it, not analyzing it, not managing it. Being in it. Let the people you love feel that you love them. Let yourself feel that you are loved. This sounds simple. For most of us it requires more practice than any technique on this menu.
🌘 Luteal — Days 17–28
The Autumn. The Waning Moon within.
Luteal phase is where relational work gets real. The social warmth of ovulation fades, tolerance for inauthenticity decreases, and what has been accepted or overlooked in relationships begins to surface with uncomfortable clarity. Late luteal in particular tends to amplify whatever is unresolved - old resentments, unmet needs, the gap between how a relationship looks and how it actually feels. This is not the phase to dismiss as "hormonal." It is the phase to listen to. The feelings are real. The timing makes them louder, not false.
This phase and the Relationship menu:
➕ Add: a listening practice - one conversation where your only role is to genuinely receive - is surprisingly regulating during late luteal. The act of listening, fully and without agenda, shifts the nervous system away from its contracted, self-protective stance. Paradoxically, giving full attention often does more for you than receiving it during this phase.
➖ Remove: the habit of half-listening becomes most important to address in late luteal, because this phase already narrows the available attention and makes genuine presence harder. When you catch yourself elsewhere during a conversation this week, simply return. No judgment. Just return.
🌀 Deepen: a seven-day relationship journal - the evening practice of noting one relational moment from each day - captures the full emotional arc of luteal and gives you something invaluable: a real picture of how you relate when you are not performing for anyone, not even yourself. What you find there is information. Receive it as such.
Journaling prompt for this phase: What is this phase of my cycle trying to tell me about one of my relationships right now? If I trusted what I am feeling rather than arguing with it, what would it say?
General recommendations: Lower relational expectations during late luteal - of others and of yourself. This is not the week for the big conversation, the confrontation, or the declaration. It is the week for noticing, for writing, for letting feelings move through without immediately acting on them. What feels urgent in late luteal very rarely is. What feels true in late luteal very often is. Your job this week is to tell the difference. Sleep on it. Write it down. And speak it, if you still want to, in follicular.
