🌑 Menstruation: Days 1–5 The Winter. The New Moon within.
Stillness does not need to be added during menstruation, it comes naturally. The bleeding body withdraws from the external world by design, and with that withdrawal comes a natural quiet that waking life rarely offers. What you may find during this phase is presence - sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes profound. The veil is thin and the body is honest.
This phase and the Stillness menu:
➕ Add: a daily body stillness - savasana outside of any practice, just for itself - is your most aligned choice now. The body is already asking to be horizontal. Meet it there consciously.
➖ Remove: productive restlessness is the most important thing to release during menstruation, the compulsion to process every feeling into resolution rather than simply allowing it to be present. What arises in the quiet during bleeding does not always need to be done anything with. Be a witness.
🌀 Deepen: the stillness inquiry - sitting each day with the question "what am I afraid I will find in the silence?" - tends to produce the most honest answers during this phase. The usual defenses are lower. Let what surfaces, surface.
Journaling prompt for this phase: What is here in the quiet right now that I normally keep too busy to notice?
General recommendations: Do not try to make this phase productive or spiritually significant. The significance is already present. Simply reduce the noise - internal and external - as much as life allows, and let the body show you what it knows. Menstruation is its own form of stillness teaching.
🌒 Follicular: Days 6–13The Spring. The Waxing Moon within.
The returning energy of follicular can make chosen stillness feel counterintuitive - there is momentum, curiosity, a pull toward doing and beginning. This is exactly why this phase is valuable for investigating your relationship with stillness rather than simply resting in it. You are resourced enough to look at what you usually avoid, and energized enough to make a genuine commitment to practice.
This phase and the Stillness menu:
➕ Add: a morning silence practice - not speaking for the first 20 to 30 minutes after waking - is most sustainable when begun in follicular. Energy is rising and the will to experiment is real.
➖ Remove: background noise as default is most worth addressing now, because follicular's natural curiosity and clarity make it easier to actually notice what is underneath the noise once it stops. The discomfort of sudden silence is more workable with follicular resources behind you.
🌀 Deepen: mapping your own relationship with stillness - evening check-ins tracking when you felt most still and most restless each day - begun in follicular gives you a full arc of data as your cycle moves. You will see exactly how your nervous system's relationship with quiet shifts across phases.
Journaling prompt for this phase: Where in my daily life does stillness feel genuinely safe? Where does it still feel threatening or wrong?
General recommendations: Use follicular energy not to fill stillness with activity but to investigate it. This is your research phase. Begin the practices you intend to carry through the week and notice what actually makes stillness available for you.
🌕 Ovulation — Days 14–16
The Summer. The Full Moon within.
Stillness during ovulation has a particular quality - it is not the inward quiet of the menstrual phase or the investigative stillness of follicular. It is more like the pause at the top of a breath. Many women find that ovulatory stillness is easiest to access in nature or in genuine relational presence.
This phase and the Stillness menu:
➕ Add: a gazing practice - sustained, wordless attention given to one natural object each day - is especially well-suited to ovulation. The outward orientation of this phase meets the practice naturally. You are already drawn toward what is outside you. Let that draw become a stillness rather than a seeking.
➖ Remove: talking to fill space is most worth practicing this week during ovulation specifically, because this phase brings heightened social connection and with it the strongest pull toward filling silence with words. Allow one conversation this week to have more quiet in it than usual.
🌀 Deepen: a nature stillness sit - 30 minutes or more in a living place with no agenda - suits ovulation's outward energy and its natural capacity for presence. You are not retreating from life right now. You are meeting it more fully. Let the sit be a meeting rather than a withdrawal.
Journaling prompt for this phase: When I am truly present with someone or something this week, what does that stillness feel like in my body? Where do I feel it?
General recommendations: This is not the week to force solitary sitting if it feels unnatural. Ovulatory stillness arrives more through quality of presence than through physical isolation. Let your stillness practice this week be relational.
🌘 Luteal — Days 17–28
The Autumn. The Waning Moon within.
Luteal and stillness have the most complicated relationship of any phase pairing in this whole program. Early luteal can access genuine quiet - the nervous system is still relatively resourced and the inward pull is beginning. But late luteal (days 22 to 28) often makes stillness feel impossible, threatening, or simply unpleasant. What surfaces in the quiet during late luteal tends to be exactly what has not been dealt with - old feelings, unresolved tensions, the gap between the life being lived and the one being wanted.
This phase and the Stillness menu:
➕ Add: an evening digital sunset - screens off one hour before bed - is a supportive addition during late luteal, when overstimulation from screens inflames an already sensitized nervous system.
➖ Remove: filling every pause is most important to address in late luteal, because the reflexive phone-grab during this phase is almost always an avoidance of something the body is trying to surface. The pause holds information but the scroll buries it. This week, let at least some of the pauses remain empty long enough to feel what is actually there.
🌀 Deepen: deepening an existing sitting practice with less effort is most aligned with late luteal energy. This is not the week to push or extend. It is the week to do what you already do, more gently. Less control of the breath. Less managing of what arises. Less trying to feel differently than you do. Let the practice hold you rather than you holding the practice.
Journaling prompt for this phase: What feeling has been waiting in the silence this week that I have been too busy or too tired to sit with? If I let it be here right now, what does it actually need from me?
General recommendations: In late luteal, stillness is most accessible in very short doses done very gently. The goal is not to arrive at peace but to stop running from what is. Even five minutes of not running is a real practice. Do not judge what surfaces. Let the cycle complete what it is completing.
